Prof. Vittorio M. N. Passaro

Vittorio M. N. Passaro received his Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering (cum laude) from University of Bari in 1988 and his Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering, curriculum Optoelectronics, from Politecnico di Bari in 1992. From May 1991 to September 2000 he was researcher of Electronics at Politecnico di Bari. Since October 2000, he joined Politecnico di Bari as an Associate Professor of “Electronics”. Since February 2014 he received the national qualification for full professorship in “Electronics”.
Since 1988 his research interests have been focused on several theoretical and experimental aspects of Electronic, Optoelectronic and Photonic Technologies. He has published contributions in modeling, design, simulation and fabrication of integrated optical devices and circuits for optical signal processing, telecommunications and sensing applications, by considering a number of materials and technologies, mainly ferroelectric (lithium niobate) and semiconductors (silicon and various group IV compounds, III-V alloy compounds). He has been also involved in studies on dry etching mechanisms, proton exchange technologies, nonlinear effects in silicon and semiconductor lasers. Currently, he is mainly involved in Group IV Photonics (silicon-on-insulator, silicon compounds, germanium) and fiber optic sensors. 
Since 2004 he has formed and leads the Photonics Research Group (URL: http://dee.poliba.it/photonicsgroup). The group has established collaborations with several international research groups, including University of Surrey, University of Southampton, University of Glasgow, Russian Academy of Sciences, University of Trento, Universidad de Valencia, Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, University of Massachusetts. He is author or co-author of more than 330 papers published in high impact international journals (one by Nature Photonics), book chapters and conference proceedings, and he is the holder of two international patents as well as the Editor of three scientific books (one by Springer) and one for teaching. He has been invited several times to give talks in Universities and Research Centres, as well as to publish his research activities.

About teaching activities, he has a very long experience in a number of academic courses, including Digital Electronics, Applied Electronics, Electronic Technologies, Photonics and Optoelectronics. He has been the supervisor for a very large number of final thesis for graduating students, as well as Ph.D. thesis. Since 2012 Prof. Passaro is the coordinator of the Master Degree in Electronic Engineering and since 2015 he is the coordinator of PhD Program in Electrical and Information Engineering.Since many years, Prof. Passaro serves as a referee for a number of international journals and for several national and international Institutions, including MIUR, Austrian Research Council, Israel Science Foundation and Romanian Authority for Scientific Research. He has been responsible of a number of national and international Projects on Photonics, including the european MERMIG FP7 project. Since March 2012 he serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Sensors journal (MDPI), and he is an invited Member of many Editorial Boards of international journals. Prof. Passaro was one of the members of Committee proposing the IEEE Italian Chapter on Nanotechnology and still now he is the representative of the Polytechnic of Bari in the frame of PHOTONICS21 european platform (workgroup WG5, since 2007). Prof. Passaro is IEEE Senior Member (since 2005), Optical Society of America Senior Member (since 2012), Associate Member of National Consortium for Telecommunications (since 2011) and Associate Member of National Institute of Nuclear Physics and CERN (since 2014).
